“No human masterpiece has ever been created without great labor.”

“No human masterpiece has ever been created without great labor.”

The Double Block Competition began this morning, February 22, with the blowing of the horn. “A dynamic duo making masterpieces using only two blocks of ice – a sensation to see.” The teams have until 10pm on the 24th to complete their two block masterpieces. With only three days to finish there was much activity in the woods on the morning of the first day. Blocks are being positioned and the carvers are already hard at work. There are 24 teams of two for this year’s competition. The carvers are from the US, Thailand, Portugal, France, Canada, Australia, Germany, Japan and China.

The titles tickle our fantasy as it’s always fun to guess how they will evolve. There is one sculpture named Hippos with Friends, one called Fruit Fight. Other titles include Owl Night Celebration and Pouncing Floof. Now that last one really has me wondering. Come to the park and watch these blocks come to life. Double Block is my favorite.

Just for fun: the last picture shows our volunteer bringing the coffee cart into the woods for the carvers.
